septic SYSTEM MAINTENANCE

General Guidelines

Pump Regularly

Most residential septic tanks should be inspected every 3 years and pumped every 3–5 years, depending on household size and usage.

Conserve Water

Too much water entering the system too quickly can reduce treatment effectiveness.

Helpful practices:

  • Fix leaks promptly

  • Spread out laundry loads

  • Use high-efficiency fixtures

  • Avoid running multiple water-heavy appliances at once

Protect the Drain Field

Never:

  • Drive or park vehicles over it

  • Build structures on top of it

  • Plant large trees nearby

Keep gutters, sump pumps, and roof drainage directed away from the system.

Watch What Goes Down the Drain

Never flush or pour:

  • Grease or cooking oils

  • Wipes (even “flushable” ones)

  • Medications

  • Paints or solvents

  • Harsh chemicals

  • Excess food waste

Garbage disposals increase septic loading and may require more frequent pumping.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How often should I pump my septic tank?

Most systems should be pumped every 3–5 years.

Can a failing septic system affect the lake?

Yes. Nutrients and bacteria can move through groundwater and contribute to water quality problems.

Are additives necessary?

Most properly functioning systems do not require septic additives.

Can I plant over my drain field?

Grass is best. Avoid trees, shrubs, and deep-rooted plants.

Is it okay to use a garbage disposal?

Limited use is best. Garbage disposals increase solids entering the tank.

Seasonal & vacation home considerations

Many Platte Lake homes are seasonal. Opening and closing cottages properly can help prevent septic issues.

Before Opening for the Season

  1. Inspect for signs of leaks or backup
  2. Check pumps and alarms if applicable
  3. Use water gradually after long periods of inactivity

Before Winterizing

  1. Repair leaks
  2. Pump tank if due
  3. Avoid directing winter drainage toward the drain field
