How a septic system works

Your septic system is one of the last lines of defense between household wastewater and platte lake.

A conventional septic system has three main parts:

  1. The house plumbing
  2. The septic tank
  3. The drain field (also called a leach field)

Wastewater flows from the home into the septic tank, where solids settle to the bottom and oils float to the top. The partially treated water then moves into the drain field, where soil naturally filters and treats it before it returns to groundwater.

warning signs of a failing septic system

A failing septic system may not always be obvious, but common warning signs include:

  • Sewage odors indoors or outdoors
  • Slow drains or gurgling plumbing
  • Wet or unusually green areas over the drain field
  • Standing water near the system
  • Algae or weed growth near shorelines
  • Backups into sinks, tubs, or toilets

If you notice any of these signs, contact a licensed septic professional promptly.
